1. Taxation Update: As we shared last month, policy makers in Washington, DC and Raleigh have made tax policy a legislative priority this year. In Washington, the Ways & Means Committee is holding a hearing this month on charitable deductions. This is the first step in what is expected to be a broader look at federal tax reform. Later this month, we’ll be heading to Washington to meet with lawmakers during the CUNA GAC. In Raleigh, the League’s Governmental Affairs staff has been meeting with key lawmakers over the past several weeks. These meetings have been very positive, and the feedback we’re getting is that the House & Senate plan to work together to come up with a plan for tax reform in NC.

2. Taxation – Where Do We Go from Here? While tax policy remains a legislative priority and “all options are on the table,” the sense we are getting is that nothing imminent is coming with regard to reviewing the tax status of credit unions. This means credit unions have time to communicate the “value proposition” they bring to the table, and educate staff and members about the structure and purpose of credit unions. The League developed and shared with CEOs a comprehensive grassroots plan on taxation in January. This plan includes talking points and other communications tools for credit union staff and members. We encourage credit unions to educate members and staff. Please contact us at the League if we can provide any information to you with regard to this issue.

3. SRCUS Dates/Scholarship: If you are looking for an opportunity to enhance the leadership within your organization, the Southeast Regional CUNA Management School (or SRCUS) offers a premier learning opportunity for the credit union managers of tomorrow. This year, The Georgia Center will be hosting the event June 7-14 in Athens, GA. The League is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities to attend the class. Please contact Lauren DeAngelis at the League if you would like more information about the school or the scholarship.
