SECU Members Announce a $2 Million Challenge Grant for New SECU Family House in Wilmington

Posted on December 21, 2012

SECU Foundation, funded solely by State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) members, is pleased to announce that a $2 million challenge grant has been provided for the construction of SECU Family House at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) in Wilmington, NC. The new hospitality house will provide affordable, home-like accommodations for out-of-town patients or families of patients in need of a place to stay while loved ones are being treated at NHRMC. The SECU Family House at NHRMC will have approximately 24 guest rooms, each with a private bath, and will offer a large fully-equipped kitchen and living room for guests to use during their stay. SECU Foundation provided the challenge grant through a partnership with the New Hanover Regional Medical Center, NHRMC Auxiliary, and NHRMC Foundation.

The new facility will provide additional guest quarters and enhanced amenities to support the increasing needs of the current NHRMC Hospitality House. Upon completion of the SECU Family House at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, services and staff will relocate to the new guest facility.

“We are grateful to the SECU Foundation for this grant,” says Jack Barto, president and chief executive officer of New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “The NHRMC Hospitality House has been offering accommodations to patients and families at NHRMC for many years. This partnership will help us build a new facility, while also helping us continue our mission to offer accommodations to our patients and their families at a time when they need it most.”

“SECU Foundation is pleased to offer this $2 million challenge grant to the NHRMC, NHRMC Auxiliary, and NHRMC Foundation to help fill the growing need for affordable hospitality house services in New Hanover County,” remarks Jim Barber, SECU Foundation Board Chair. “Hospitality homes like SECU Family House are a tremendous resource and provide a warm and comfortable place for traveling families to rest and cope in a time of great need. SECU members are proud to support this project which truly represents the credit union’s philosophy of ‘People Helping People.’”
