Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) received second place for the statewide Louise A. Herring Philosophy in Action Member Service Award for a debit card that benefits NC State Firemen’s Association (NCSFA). The award recognition came at a special banquet held June 11th at the 77th Annual Meeting of the NC Credit Union League.
The annual Louise A. Herring Philosophy in Action Member Service Award recognizes credit unions that, in day-to-day operations, demonstrate the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” in an extraordinary way. Credit unions compete by asset category, with LGFCU receiving second place in the over $1 billion asset category.
The credit union offers a special VISA debit card that benefits the NCSFA and is available to all credit union members who are firefighters. The credit union donates 50% of the “swipe fees” generated by the usage of this card to the NCSFA. These proceeds are used to provide training, scholarships and education programs to firefighters across the state of NC.
This program has provided more than $740,000 to the NCSFA to date. It has also allowed the credit union to demonstrate its commitment to a key part of its membership, as well as the communities statewide that are served by these brave men and women. There are currently more than 6,300 cards in circulation.
