Larry Wilson Receives Larry Johnson Order of Merit Lifetime Achievement Award

Larry Wilson has been a key catalyst in the growth of Coastal FCU in his 38 year career. He has also provided visionary leadership in both the state and national credit union movement.

Coastal Federal Credit Union’s CEO/President, Larry Wilson, has been awarded the Larry Johnson Order of Merit Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Carolina Credit Union League.

The Larry Johnson Order of Merit Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest individual credit union honor recognizing an individual who has dedicated his career to promote the credit union philosophy, and whose leadership to North Carolina credit unions and related organizations has sustained throughout his career.

Wilson’s influence and leadership displayed throughout his career was paramount to Coastal’s successes and reputation as a top industry leader. His strong advocacy for innovation and use of cutting-edge technology was vital in building Coastal’s overall brand and operational structure. More important, Wilson has remained focused and committed to serving members through financial literacy initiatives and setting forth requirements that all products, services and programs are ‘member-friendly and fair’.

Wilson will be retiring at the end of June, ending his 38-year tenure at the helm of the organization. He has been instrumental in Coastal’s growth, from $3.5 million in assets to $2.1 billion, with 400 employees and 193,000 members representing more than 1,200 organizations.

Outside of Coastal, he served on various committees and was heavily involved within the community. He has served on the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation Advisory Committee in 1980-1982, the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) Region III Director from 2002 to 2011, the Credit Union Direct Corporation, North Carolina Cooperative Council, North Carolina Credit Union League, CUNA Mutual Group, Eastern North Carolina better Business Bureau, American Red Cross, and First Carolina Corporate Credit Union’s board of directors, Federal Reserve Thrift Advisory Council, and the Fannie Mae National Housing Advisory Council and as a National Director of the Credit Union Association on its Strategic Planning Committee.

Wilson has earned many honors and awards over his career:

  • In 1985, he received the Professional of the Year Award by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU).
  • In 1991, NAFCU recognized his credit union as the Credit Union of the Year.
  • In 1992, he was named Executive of the Year by the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES) and Named Person of the Year by the North Carolina Credit Union League.
  • In 1993, he was inducted into the CUES Hall of Fame.
  • In 2000, he was awarded the Mark of Excellence Award for sustained leadership.
