NC Community Federal Credit Union (NCCFCU) received second place for the statewide Louise A. Herring Philosophy in Action Member Service Award for a program aimed at helping airmen at Seymour Johnson AFB understand car buying and financing basics. The award recognition came at a special banquet held June 11th at the 77th Annual Meeting of the NC Credit Union League.
The annual Louise A. Herring Philosophy in Action Member Service Award recognizes credit unions that, in day-to-day operations, demonstrate the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” in an extraordinary way. Credit unions compete by asset category, with NCCFCU receiving second place in the $50 - $250 million asset category.
Young military members are prone to being victimized by predatory lenders, and one way is through unscrupulous auto dealers. In order to prevent this, the credit union provides an Airman Auto Loan Program aimed specifically at young military members.
This training program guides the airmen through the basic information they will need to make an informed decision about purchasing a car. The program also helps airmen understand how to obtain favorable financing, and do proper vehicle maintenance and care.
This program has been so well received, it is now mandatory for new airmen to take the course when arriving at Seymour Johnson AFB.
