The annual Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award recognizes and promotes credit unions’ social responsibility efforts within the communities they serve. Mountain won in the $100 - $200 million asset category for its support of the Relay for Life, among many other community projects.
Fundraising for the Relay for Life is a year-round effort for the credit union staff and includes bake sales, raffles and participation in the annual Relay for Life event. The credit union’s original goal was $5000 in 2012, which the staff exceeded by more than $2,000!
The Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award recognizes leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of youth financial literacy. It considers all activities supporting the personal financial education of young members and non-members. Credit unions compete by asset category, in order to ensure fairness. Mountain received the honorable mention in the $50 - $150 million asset category.
The credit union held classes at three area high schools in 2012, teaching young people about budgeting and finance, including spending wisely and “wants versus needs.” These classes helped a combined 290 students learn more about how to manage their money.
