Sam Whitehurst, the Summit Credit Union President/CEO, won the prestigious Mark of Excellence Award at the 78th annual meeting of the North Carolina Credit Union League (NCCUL). Whitehurst received the award, one of the highest honors bestowed to credit union people in North Carolina, in a special awards ceremony held Monday evening, June 10th in Pinehurst.
The Mark of Excellence Award recognizes sustained leadership among NC credit union people. Eligibility is limited to past winners of the Ronald J. Hutchins Credit Union Person of the Year Award who have at least 25 years of service in the credit union industry. A committee made up of statewide credit union leaders selected Whitehurst to receive the award.
Whitehurst’s credit union career covers 25 years. He joined the staff of State Employees’ CU as a Loan Officer and was later promoted to VP/City Executive. He then was named President/CEO of Winston-Salem City Employees’ CU (now Winston-Salem FCU). Summit named Whitehurst President/CEO in 2002.
During his tenure, Summit has implemented a variety of new products and services aimed at helping members reach their financial goals. In addition, providing member financial education has been a key feature of Whitehurst’s stewardship of the credit union. He is also active in a variety of other credit union initiatives on the local, state and national level.
Whitehurst won the Ronald J. Hutchins Credit Union Person of the Year Award in 2005.
