Local Government FCU Awards $143,000 Through Two Scholarship Programs

Posted on May 23, 2012

Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) congratulates 120 recipients of its LGFCU Scholarship Award, and 24 recipients of its School of Government (SOG) Scholarship Award, both designed to exclusively assist local government members and employees in their academic and career pursuits.

In its 14th consecutive year, the LGFCU Scholarship Award recognizes the academic excellence of 120 students who maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, as well as being high achievers in extracurricular activities; financial need is also a consideration. This year’s recipients will each have $1,000 sent directly to their school of choice in August to use toward tuition, textbooks, a laptop or other educational expenses. Graduating high school seniors and post-secondary students must be LGFCU members to qualify. The next application period will begin in November 2012, and winners are announced in May.

In an effort to help members strengthen their skills and thereby enhance job performance, LGFCU awarded $23,260 to 24 members through the SOG Scholarship Award. Since 2002, monies from this scholarship program (ranging from $275 to $2,000) are applied to classes and seminars offered by the SOG at UNC-Chapel Hill, the largest university-based local government training, advisory and research organization in the United States. This scholarship is awarded three times a year, with the next application deadline of August 1.

“Scholarships are a great way for credit unions to make a difference within their particular fields of membership,” says LGFCU President Maurice Smith. “We certainly want to encourage and assist our members with their educational and career aspirations, as this will ultimately benefit the communities in which they live and work.”
