Local Government FCU Member Honored for Being Outstanding Volunteer

One Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) member and Advisory Council volunteer, Shonda Corbett, gives her free time to others as much as she does anything else. That’s why an LGFCU employee nominated her for a 2012 Cabot Community Celebrity Award, which honors outstanding individuals who are bright spirits in their communities.

LGFCU Member Development Officer Chris Temple nominated Corbett for the award. He noted Corbett is a lifelong volunteer, having worked with 4-H of Columbus County, N.C. as a child. In the years since, she has been a dedicated community volunteer, especially in the areas of protecting children and older adults. These volunteer commitments are in addition to two jobs Corbett currently holds. She also recently received a master’s in public administration from N.C. Central University.

“I nominated Shonda because she is committed to the communities in which she works and lives,” said Temple. “She never hesitates to take on new volunteer opportunities. Whether it’s serving on LGFCU's Advisory Council, volunteering at Cary's Koka Booth Amphitheater or participating in Wake County's Department of Aging, Shonda dedicates her free time to improving the lives of others.”

The cruise, awarded by Cabot Creamery Cooperative, was created to honor community volunteers who give generously of their time and talents. Working withCelebrity Cruise Lines, Cabot provided 41 volunteers nationwide with the opportunity to participate in a weeklong, round-trip cruise from Seattle to Alaska in September.

“I volunteer because I want to help make people’s lives better,” said Corbett.

Even those who just met Shonda on the cruise were impressed with the care and generosity she shows for those around her.

“Shonda represents the spirit and heart of all the good people who volunteer in their communities,” said Diana Meehan, Cabot Creamery Cooperative’s Director of Marketing/National Programs. “It was such an honor for us to have her among the amazing 41 volunteer celebrities on board the ship. She is an amazing young woman.”
