Professional Development: Trainer's Roundtable Includes CU Best Practices, Gaps in Training

Posted on December 14, 2011

Credit union professionals from across NC gathered in Raleigh December 8th for the Trainer's Roundtable meeting. The 25 staff, which represented credit unions of all sizes, shared best practices and key gaps in training at the meeting.

The roundtable discussion was organized by Lauren DeAngelis, NCCUL's Director of Professional Development. "I was very pleased with the outcome of the first meeting," DeAngelis said. "As credit union trainers and managers, we are all responsible for helping our staffs reach their goals and objectives, and training is a key way to help credit union staff members realize their career potential."

This roundtable meeting was generally open forum and allowed staff to share what's working at their credit unions. "We have been very aggressive with our onboarding process," noted Allegacy FCU Training Manager LaNeta Jones, "and I heard some ideas here today that will definitely make our onboarding process even better."

Gaps in training were also widely discussed in the five-hour session. "That's the real power of having meetings like this," said DeAngelis, "so we can share resources and work together to improve our training and professional development."

In addition to the open forum, attendees also discussed putting together a future meeting schedule and specific professional development topics to discuss. The event ended with a "Learning Map" exercise, which is an interactive small group discussion about the history of credit unions and key challenges for the future.

DeAngelis is in the process of formulating a meeting calendar for 2012. If you are interested in being contacted about a future Trainer's Roundtable meeting, please contact Lauren at (800) 822-8859, ext. 9059 or ldeangelis@ncleague.org.
