News from the CCUF: Foundation and Credit Unions Award Annual Scholarships

Posted on July 12, 2012

Your Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and credit unions throughout North Carolina have completed their annual education scholarship awards cycle. 58 students have been awarded $63,900, along with $119,000 awarded separately by Local Government Federal Credit Union. “It’s such a ‘foundational,’ if you’ll pardon the pun, function of what we do but it doesn’t get talked about much,” says John P. McGrail, CCUF President/CEO. “We have credit unions and the Foundation aiding students across the state reach their academic dreams. In the application process we have them discuss credit union principles and how they can apply to their own lives. Who knows? I hope we could be building some of our movement’s future leaders.”

Credit unions interested in building a designated scholarship fund can contact McGrail to get more information. “It’s really simple to set up and maintain. You just have to be interested in making the scholarships happen each year by distributing applications and making award decisions. The Foundation takes care of management of the fund and making sure checks get to the designated schools.” Scholarships can be a wonderful marketing tool showing your credit union’s commitment to your membership and making a lasting investment in a young member’s life.

McGrail wishes to express his thanks to the Foundation staff for their assistance. “They do so much to coordinate this process. They read through each and every application sent to the CCUF, get correspondence out to each applicant, and see things through the distribution process. Their support makes the program successful.”

If your credit union is interested in starting a designated scholarship fund, or wants to know anything about other CCUF initiatives, please contact John P. McGrail at 704.305.7587 or email at john@carolinasfoundation.org. You can follow the CCUF on Twitter @CCUFoundation.
