CUNA honored the nationwide Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring and Alphonse Desjardins Award winners during the Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, DC. The winners included three credit unions from North Carolina: State Employees' CU, American Partners FCU and Carolina Postal CU.

SECU took home the first place Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action in the more than $1 billion asset category. The annual Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action recognizes credit unions that, in day-to-day operations, demonstrate the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” in an extraordinary way. SECU received the award for its creation of the Estate Planning Essentials (EPE) program. The Credit Union began offering its non-traditional program to members in 2011 to fill member needs for basic, affordable estate planning, including a will. EPE ensures that members statewide have access to quality estate planning education, estate planning attorneys and affordable documents to help protect them and their families. Receiving no commissions or program fees, SECU personnel have helped over 7,000 members determine their estate planning needs to create a sound financial plan for their future. American Partners FCU
APFCU netted second place nationwide in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award in the $20-$50 million asset category. The annual Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award recognizes and promotes credit unions’ social responsibility efforts within the communities they serve. APFCU won in the $20 - $50 million asset category for its support of the Triad Flight of Honor, which honors the courage and sacrifice of World War II veterans by flying them to the World War II memorial in Washington, DC. The credit union and its members combined to raise enough money to send five WWII veterans to Washington, DC on the Flight of Honor. Carolina Postal CU
CPCU received an honorable mention nationally for the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award. The credit union earned the honorable mention in the $50-100 million asset category for its support of the National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp out Hunger” Food Drive in the Charlotte and Piedmont Triad regions of NC.The credit union funded a billboard campaign in the Piedmont Triad region to assist the letter carriers in their collection drive. In the Charlotte area, the credit union paid for the printing and delivery of 50,000 post cards to remind residents to support the food drive.
