Potential Political Leaders Attend Candidate Training Sessions (2/2/2012)
 |
| More than 50 people who are considering a run for local or statewide office in NC attended the Campaign Academy events held in Hickory, Rocky Mount and Fayetteville this week. | The North Carolina Credit Union League and the North Carolina Electric Cooperatives hosted candidate trainings sessions this week in Hickory, Fayetteville and Rocky Mount.
Over 50 participants considering a run for local offices, the state legislature, as well as an incumbent State House member attended the training. Attendees received important information about fundraising, working with volunteers and campaign finance laws. Experts from the State Board of Elections and CUNA provided valuable insight into running effective campaigns.
“I've been considering running for the NC State House of Representatives for about a year, but didn't really know where to start,” said Tom Mekis, Board of Trustees Member at Piedmont Advantage Credit Union. “The Campaign School was a terrific resource both in helping me decide whether to run and the mechanics of running a successful campaign. I highly recommend this to anyone considering a run for elected office at any level.”
Pam Melton, NCCUL's Director of Political Affairs, said the sessions were very well received in all three cities. "The speakers received many expressions of gratitude for providing such vital information, and appreciation that companies would even consider offering such a service to the public," Melton said.
Melton added that the meetings not only demonstrated the credit union commitment to communities, but also introduced some attendees to credit unions and cooperatives. "This training provided a great service to potential candidates," she said "and it served as a foundation for building great relationships with our future political leaders."

You have an important opportunity to make a significant impact at this year’s Governmental Affairs Conference whether you are attending or not. One simple way to do this is to install Project Zip Code so that your credit union members are matched to their federal and state legislative districts.
Project Zip Code is available via download at www.pzconline.com/install. By going to the link, you will be able to download the full user manual in addition to PZC 12.0.
