Dean Adams, who is safety and security officer with Allegacy Federal Credit Union, won the
Rick Brady Award as
Financial Investigator of the Year for his work on a card scam in the Winston-Salem area earlier this year. Adams will receive the award, which is given by the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI), in September.
The IAFCI is a non-profit international organization, which provides services and an environment within which information about financial fraud, fraud investigation and fraud prevention methods can be collected, exchanged and taught for the common good of the financial payment industry and our global society. Started in 1968, the IAFCI has 39 chapters in locations worldwide.
Adams won the award for his work in uncovering a card scam which hit financial institutions with hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses earlier this year. Adams worked with a consultant to design a software program that would detect card fraud. This software program revealed the scam, and Adams quickly notified financial institutions that were unaware that they were being victimized. "Dean's work not only helped uncover the fraud, his quick action in reporting it to financial institutions and law enforcement helped prevent further losses from the scam," remarked Allegacy's Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Darryl Worrell.
The Rick Brady Award annually recognizes, a non-law enforcement financial crimes investigator for investigative excellence of financial crimes and outstanding service and dedication towards meeting the goals and objectives of IAFCI. Investigators must be nominated for individual achievement, not as a member of a task force or sting operation. This award is in remembrance of the late Richard T. Brady, whose exceptional dedication to the Association, as Constitution & By-Laws Chairman, and his promotion of fraud prevention procedures.
Adams is a regular participant in the Carolinas Risk Management Council meetings. "It's good to see someone of Dean's caliber get recognized for their hard work," said Kim Bohannon, NCCUL's vice president of compliance and risk management.
